For a CSP (Cloud Solution Provider) that offers multiple cloud solutions to organizations, often the biggest challenge is not enabling customers to use these solutions, but it is in ensuring that the customers are correctly billed for their usage. Primarily, most CSPs find it difficult to properly account for all the resources offered to a client in the monthly bill and to apply the correct discount offer/rate card/rate pack that is defined for a customer or a group of customers. If usage bills are not generated correctly, they may not only lead to revenue losses but they may also impact the organization’s reputation if customers notice any issues in monthly bills. Often customers request for access to a portal that provides them an itemized snapshot of their bills based on their usage so that they can optimize operating costs and manage resources. For this reason, many CSPs, using unreliable cloud billing solutions which might result in other market players getting access to your customer information.

If your organization is a CSP and has been worried by any of the problems like these or other similar problems, Aquila Clouds platform offers a specialized solution that precisely addresses all billing requirements of CSPs. You automatically ingest customer data from your cloud service provider to Aquila Clouds platform, and account for as many resources as used by customers and customize the resource rates for each customer. Aquila Clouds not only guarantees operational excellence but also assures you that your customer satisfaction index will be the highest when it comes to providing them with accurate monthly usage bills.

Aquila Clouds platform features BillOps system that enables the CSPs to perform the following tasks for billing customers using the Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure / Azure Stack and Google Cloud Platform:

· Define a rate card line: You can define region-specific rate card lines for each category and sub-category of resources. The rate card can be defined for hourly, daily and monthly units according to the resource count. Aquila Clouds enables you to define the period for which the rate card remains effective and set the state of rate card to Active or In-Active so that rate card can be reused as and when required. This saves you from wrongly applying rate cards to customers or regions.

· Define a rate pack: You can define a rate pack to bundle up two or more resources that are frequently used by a customer or a group of customers. This enables you to consider all resources (of same or different categories) that are used and to offer discounts to customers that use many resources. For a rate pack, you can define a pack level rate or define a rate for each resource included in the pack. This saves you from wrongly applying discounts to customers or regions.

· Import rate packs: You can also import any existing rate pack that is defined for any other region or customer and reuse it. This saves you from duplicating rate packs.

Define a managed service: You can account for the costs incurred for managed service for any resource used by your end-customer. You can add cost for the managed service as markup or add it as a discount.

· Generate and view monthly bills for customers: You can generate monthly bills for customers and set their state to Draft to review the bill details before publishing it. This helps you to ensure that the rate cards and/or rate packs are properly assigned to the required customer or group of customers.

· Billing portal for end-customers: Aquila Clouds provides end-customers access to the billing portal to enable your customers to get an itemized snapshot of their operating costs and accordingly plan their operations. This provides additional transparency and assurance to your customers.

Note: Itemized snapshot is available to the customers only if the bill is generated and set to the Frozen state.

All these features come with an assurance of complete protection of your customer information. So, if you are a CSP, Aquila Clouds is the perfect solution to your organization’s any billing needs.

One size doesn’t fit all – This holds true when it comes to deciding the type and number of VMs, and storage volume to be used in your organization, business unit, or department. The type and number of VMs and storage volumes that your competitors use maybe quite different from the ones that your organization needs. Similarly, no two business units or departments in your organization may have the same requirements. All requirements keep changing from time-to-time and the bouquet of VMs offered by different cloud service providers is ever evolving. Tracking VM utilization and storage volume, and accordingly picking the right combination is a time intensive activity. If the these are not identified properly, your organization may end up with either one of the following:

  • Spending more money on VMs and storage with low utilization

  • Compromising on performance of VMs and storage with over utilization

Wouldn’t it be great, if we tell you that you can view automatic recommendations for your organization and effectively use them to eliminate under and overutilization? Wondering if that is possible? Yes, it is possible using the Aquila Clouds platform!

Based on your usage pattern, the Aquila Clouds platform enables you to perform the following for Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform:

  • View the three possible options for different VMs that you can use to further optimize your cloud setup and select them to right-size according to the recommendations.

  • View recommendations for changing to reserved and spot/low priority VMs.

  • View recommendations to optimize startup and shutdown of VMs.

  • View recommendations for unattached volumes and old snapshots that can be deleted to control operating costs and delete them if required.

  • View details of over-provisioned volumes.

Remember all this can be done without having to switch to the cloud service providers’ platform. When managing VMs and volume in a cloud setup, there are at least 1 million tasks to be worried about. With Aquila Clouds, identifying the right combination and effectively tracking their utilization would no longer be one of them!

Note:

  • Aquila Clouds provides recommendations based on the data collected for past 30 days.

Does your organization have multiple VM instances unused for couple of hours during the day?

Does your organization have multi-cloud setup and find it difficult to effectively schedule all VM instances?

Does your organization have high operating cost for cloud services due to unused VM instances?

If your answer to any or all the above questions is Yes, don’t worry! You can effectively handle scenarios like this and many others using Aquila Clouds’ single window VM instance scheduler for multi-cloud setup.

Aquila Clouds enables you to view and configure the schedule for VM instances of Cloud Service Providers such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure from the Startup/Shutdown window in the application. Aquila Clouds provides instance utilization report in the Recommendation Dashboard window for all days of the week, based on the data collected for past 30 days. With the help of this report, you can set the schedule for the required VM instance in the Startup/Shutdown window to automatically start it and shut it down at the scheduled time on the required day of the week. You can also set the schedule according to your requirement if the report is not available. Once scheduled, Aquila Clouds recurrently starts and shuts down that VM instance every week according to the schedule, thereby, eliminating the need for manually tracking it every week.

Wondering, what if cloud operator of one department of your organization accidentally changes the schedule of a VM instance that is configured by operator of another department. Don’t worry! Whenever you set or update schedule of a VM instance, automatic email notifications are sent to predefined cloud operators’ group of your organization alerting them about the change in schedule of the VM instance. Aquila Clouds not only helps your organization to bring down the operating costs of the Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure service but also protects your organization against human errors.

To set schedule of a VM instance:

  1. On the left pane, select Startup/Shutdown .

  2. In the Startup/Shutdown window, select the cloud service provider of the required VM instance.

  3. From the Group list, select the group of the required VM instance.

  4. From the Instance list, select the required VM instance. Aquila Clouds displays the hourly startup and shutdown schedule for the entire week of the selected VM instance.

  5. For the required day, click the required hour to toggle on/off the VM instance for that hour. For instance, if you want to startup VM at 8 AM on Monday, toggle on 8 AM for Monday in the Startup/Shutdown window. Note: Toggle on is indicated by green box and toggle off is indicated by red box in the Startup/Shutdown window.

  6. Similarly, toggle the VM on/off for other hours or days of the week. You can also apply this schedule to other VM instances in the group. To apply, select the Apply Schedule To Group check box.
